As part of a TRT roundtable discussion Professor Agarwala explores the trade-offs between economic growth and the potential impact on the environment. While welcoming the UK government’s renewed focus on long-term investment to stimulate growth and improve productivity, he questions the selection of the 3rd runway at Heathrow as the highest priority infrastructure project.

Citing UK’s relatively recent low levels of infrastructure investment compared to other developed European nations, he makes a case to stimulate more immediate growth through investment in other transport infrastructure options including road, rail and ports.

With fellow panellists, Scarlett MccGwire (former Labour Advisor) and Celeste Hicks (Policy Manager at the Aviation Environment Federation) the potential environmental consequences of the development at Heathrow are considered alongside possible solutions such as the deployment of sustainable aviation fuels.
